How to get your learner's permit checklist

  • Sign up for our approved California DMV driver education course.

  • Complete the online driver’s course with a final score of 3840 points out of 4800 points.

  • Get your Certificate of Completion (DL 400C) in the mail within 2 – 7 business days.

  • Make an appointment with a CA DMV office of your choice to schedule your permit test. You can do so by phone call to (800) 777-0133 or you can just walk in.

  • Bring all of the following documents to your permit test:
  1. A completed and signed (by parents or guardians) Driver License or Identification Card Application form (DL 44)  online or pick one up at your local DMV office. If you do it online don’t forget to bring the printed completed form!
  2. Your social security number (write it down or memorize it).
  3. Bring proof of identity, which can be a birth certificate, passport or proof of citizenship.
  4. Bring two (2) accepted proofs of residency .
  5. Bring your Certificate of Completion (DL 400C)!
  •  Provide a thumbprint.

  • Take the CA DMV Permit knowledge test(s). You have to get at least 38 questions right out of 46. You get 3 chances to take the test, but if you fail a test you have to wait 7 days (not including the day the test was failed) before taking the test again. If you fail the test all 3 times, you have to start over by filling out a new application and paying the fee again. So make sure you study!
